So often my best purchases are the ones I waver on and try to convince myself out of. Those things I’m not sure of end up being the most loved and used. My goal is always to make more of my purchases these “best” and loved kind — more classics, things that fit seamlessly into my closet and life, and make my life a little prettier, happier, and easier.
Here are my 10 best purchases in 2017!
As a medical student renting with roommates, spending money on home decor isn’t really realistic. However, the cheap-o plastic mirror I had leaning against my wardrobe just made me sad every day. It took me months to finally “splurge” on this new one, and it has made all the difference! I have it hung, not over the door, and it really just adds a little shine and niceness to my room instead of cracking plastic. Considering I look in it multiple times a day, I’m really happy I finally made the change.
I had my eye on this dress for so long before I finally hit purchase! It’s more expensive than I would usually spend on a dress, but it’s also perfect! My favorite color, favorite length, and off the shoulder! I figured I’d get use out of it with nine weddings this past year. And I sure did! I wore it quite a few times and always felt great in it. I think I’ll get more use out of it over the years, too. Definite win!
Black Midi T-Shirt Dress (nearly identical)
Form fitting knit dresses aren’t usually my thing, but I thought I’d give an inexpensive t-shirt dress from Old Navy a try. Turns out it fit me just right — not too tight, but still hit my curves inthe right way. It’s a length that can go casual or a little more dressy, super light weight, and easy to layer. I ended up throwing this on to run out the door, for nicer events with a cute jacket or cardigan, and even under my white coat for work! I’m so sad it’s not sold anymore (linked a very similar one) because I’d buy more of them!
A blog client actually introduced my to this brand when I mentioned I have trouble with flats due to needing arch support. I have custom orthotics, but they just don’t fit into cute flats. Vionics are made with arch support and are actually good looking!! I bought this perforating slip on pair hoping they’d be comfortable, and they surpassed my expectations. I get compliments every time I wear them and they are the best to just slip on and go. Comfortable like tennis shoes but cute like flats. I am hoping to get a few dressier pairs for work, next!
ClassPass seemed too indulgent for me as a medical student, but over the summer I finally bit the bullet and signed up for 5 classes a month. It has been just what I need during third year! I love the gym and usually have no problem kicking my own butt, but third year has been insanely busy and stressful. Often times I have no energy or motivation after a 12 hour day, but having a fun class waiting for me perks me up. I end up working harder and getting lots of energy for a night of studying. Plus the variety of classes and the ability to go with friends is right up my alley. I’m definitely keeping this up – workout classes are a treat, but worth it for my overall health!
After dealing with cake drug-store tinted moisturizers for years, I finally bit the bullet and tried Dew Skin. I couldn’t resist Teri’s rave reviews (and gorgeous skin!) That was my gateway into the wonderful world of Beautycounter. After trying a few more products, like the Cleansing Balm and Radiance Serum, I finally signed up as a consultant. The teeny consultant fee could also count as a best purchase, because it led me into this business of spreading knowledge, health, and empowerment, all while introducing people to products they love. It’s even empowered me to think about my health in new ways, and to start working towards more financial freedom.
I didn’t know what Ponte pants were until I started reading Fran’s blog. She said she wore them all the time, but I didn’t buy any until this winter. The main idea for me was a work pant that actually fit under boots. I can’t believe I waited so long! They are thicker, nicer leggings that zip in the back and work for the hospital or casually under tunics and long sweaters. The best part – J.Crew makes them in long! I wear them constantly (way more than my jeans now!) and will most likely be buying more.
So I don’t know if it’s anything about this brush specifically, or just that I hadn’t actually gotten a new brush in years. My hair is coarse and kinky, so I need a big round brush to blow dry it smoothly. This ones totally changed my blow drying game – I don’t even have to use my straightener anymore! I still do it in a few layers, but this brush just makes blow drying it so much easier. It smooths out the roots and leaves some volume and some flip at the ends.
I bought this on a whim during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale because I wanted a new “everyday” necklace. And that it has become! It goes with everything and adds just a little niceness to any outfit. I wear it truly every day. And it goes with the Kendra Scott bracelet my boyfriend got me for my 30th birthday, too:)
I didn’t know if I could pull off this trend, but for Target’s price i had to give it a shot. I love these! They are work appropriate, but way more fun than just a plain pair of black work pants. They are very lightweight so I wore them to the hospital constantly in warmer weather. But I’ve also dressed them up with heels and a blouse for dressier occasions.
