My blog is 6 years old today!
That’s so crazy to me. Is there anyone out there that has been around since the early days? Say hi!!
The Early Days
I started this blog fresh out of college. I had actually started a food blog once during my senior year of college but I didn’t share it with anyone. Blogs don’t work too well when you’re too nervous to have anyone read them 😉
I was 22 years old, starting my very first job as a product manager at a national shoe company, and was starving for connection. I had recently recovered from Anorexia, which had damaged a lot of my relationships back in high school. My friends from college knew me and understood me, but moving back home was hard.
The blog helped a lot! I learned that I loved expressing myself in writing. It allowed my family and friends to learn more about what I had gone through which helped bring us closer. I heard from people across the world that struggled with similar things, and I made friends I still have to this day. It made me love and appreciate being vulnerable. Rarely are you the only person feeling a certain way. Opening up about raw emotions helps others feel less alone.
I’m naturally an oversharer, so it wasn’t hard to write about my life. I ended up writing through years of difficult growth, which meant talking about some not-to-pretty times in my life. I’ve received some pretty harsh criticism, and while some of it was certainly deserved, the other stuff taught me how to brush things off and take the higher road instead of fighting back. It has made me develop a thicker skin. I’ve realized that so long as I am happy and confident in my decisions, what other people think about me doesn’t really matter.
Things look a little different around here now! I used to write twice (!!) daily about what I ate and how much I ran. While I still make sure to eat (relatively) healthfully and love to exercise, that stuff just isn’t a huge focus for me anymore. Plus there are tons of other food and fitness bloggers doing a fantastic job. Instead the blog has changed as my life has. I write about a little bit of everything, including medical school, yoga, a few fun outfits, and some of my favorite things. I don’t write as many posts, but share more snippets of daily life on instagram. I’m much pickier about what companies I work with.
The title of this blog has never been more real. Life is busy! The blog isn’t my number one priority (school takes that designation) but it is really special to me and something I hope continues to evolve and grow. I’m really proud of the space I’ve built and the relationships I’ve developed. And I’m so thankful for all of YOU that read and comment. I don’t know how I got so lucky <3
