Did you know it takes less than 30 seconds for chemicals applied to our skin to get absorbed into our blood? That’s how nicotine and pain patches work! But unfortunately that means that dangerous chemicals in all our skincare, shower products, make up and more also get in. And while you might think a country like the United States would heavily regulate the products we use, that’s not the case. The FDA hasn’t passed a safety regulation on personal care products since 1938! (What??!!!) And while there are over 1,400 chemicals banned in the UK, there are only 30 in the USA. Yes, 30. The way the laws are written right now, companies can include harmful chemicals and don’t even have to list them in the ingredients. For example, the simple term “fragrance” can mean a lot of nasty stuff!
We Deserve Better
Beautycounter is a company started by Gregg Renfrew with the mission of getting safer products into the hands of everyone. They use scientific research and a rigorous testing process to ensure they are using safer ingredients while still making products are both effective and luxurious. The Beautycounter Never List™ is made up of more than 1,500 questionable or harmful chemicals that they never use as ingredients in the products. This includes the over 1,400 chemicals banned or restricted in personal care products by the European Union, plus additional chemicals screened by Beautycounter and found to be of concern. And they do amazing work at a national level, fighting for more regulation in the beauty and skincare industry.
Some natural cosmetic brands use only 100% organic ingredients. This is as pure as makeup can get, but often, the performance is lacking. While Beautycounter uses both synthetic and organic ingredients, they never compromise on the safety of the ingredients. Beautycounter has developed a groundbreaking and rigorous ingredient screening process, looking for data on skin irritation, carcinogenicity, reproductive toxicity, cumulative exposure (are we exposed to this chemical from other sources) and more.
Our health is our greatest asset
That’s why I’m in medical school and it’s why I’ve partnered with Beautycounter. My goal is NOT to sell you things you don’t need. This is about health and safety. It’s about science and research. It’s about educating and empowering you to know what you’re putting on your body. Most of us are going to be buying skincare and make up. I want us to be using safer products and supporting a company dedicated to doing the right thing.
Researchers at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health published a study in 2013 that detected lead, cadmium, chromium, aluminum and five other metals in many popular brands of lipsticks and lip glosses commonly found in drugstores and department stores.
The study also noted that children are especially susceptible to heavy metal accumulation and should not play with make up. Think of all the young girls that apply make-up daily or even multiple times a day?
