I Built My Own Treadmill Desk!

YOU GUYS I AM SO EXCITED!

I’m actually WALKING while I write this post. I built my own treadmill desk!

Okay so I found that treadmill desk online that cost almost $50, but I was certain I could come up with a way to make one myself. My dad isn’t a big “build-things” guy, so we don’t have many tools or scrap wood lying around, but I started searching the basement for random stuff I could use.

No luck for a few days. But I was determined.

So today when I opened the closet to put my coat away, I noticed this old storage riser thing we’ve had in there since I can remember. We had old bags sitting on top of it and it was definitely not necessary. But for some reason when I saw it today I thought “that will fit over the top of the treadmill!”

Even better, it has this ledge at on end that keeps my laptop from sliding off.

So I found some bungee cords in the garage and took my supplies upstairs to see. The treadmill is in my parents bedroom and gets used pretty much never. I think it’s going on 15 years old, so I won’t run on it, but for some easy walking it’s fine.

It’s like this little storage stand was built for it. It fit perfectly over the top, just inside the handles. I used the bungee cords to secure it on and then tried it out.

SUCCESS!!

It’s a little bit low, so typing isn’t the most comfortable.  But at least it keeps my shoulders down instead of tensed up in a stress ball like they usually are. And I have to be careful not to push too hard on it or it will flip.

I haven’t walked faster than 2mph. This isn’t meant for vigorous exercise, just so I don’t sit for 10 hours in a row. I definitely won’t use it all the time – I need to be sitting comfortably and have access to pen and paper when I’m doing important work – but I can totally see myself walking while reading blogs or checking email a few times a week.

I am so proud. It’s so ugly and not even cool, but I am so proud.

  1. Hahha you are so awesome. That is the funniest invention ever but kind of genius. I hate sitting still for long periods of time. As long as it isn’t being used as an extra way to get a workout in and actually maybe even shorten regular workouts, I see no problem with it. It will probably keep you more focused too!

  2. Love this idea but I fear with my coordination, I would fail miserably at any attempt.

  3. So so so awesome! I’m jealous!

Wish I had this at my job’! Hate sitting there the whole day. That’s why I take long lunches sometimes so I can go
On long walks! Lol very creative!

  5. I have a desk job and my company got flooded last year and everything destroyed – we’re in a temporary facility right now, but my work is renovating a new permanent building for us and all the desks are going to have motors so you can raise and lower them!! I am so insanely excited to be able to stand, I can just imagine that you would be even more excited to walk!!

    • that’s so cool!! I hope I can have a standing desk some day. Walking really isn’t practical for all kinds of working (at least for me)

  6. How cool! You could also watch Netflix or Hulu on it! You are seriously resourceful to “build” that contraption.

  7. Sa-weet! Nice work! Who cares what it looks like, it’s mega functional!

  8. I love it, Clare!

  9. nice work, girl! i am SO bummed my treadmill is broken and i can’t use mine anymore.

  10. So awesome! You’re so savvy :D

  11. Look at ‘chu! I am so impressed!

  12. lol. actually this is super cool! i could definitely use this. you could even stream tv shows on it!

  13. Oh my gosh so cool! I love DIY projects – especially ones that repurpose old unused stuff :)

  14. You need help.

  15. Good job.. that looks awesome!!

  16. I finally went to the dentist in December too after not going for a year. I realized I better make use of my dental plan so I had to go back multiple times in December to get everything done. I have a bad habit of NOT flossing so my gums bleed everytime I go… I’m trying to fix that now!!

  17. Does not matter, if it doesn’t look good. It works and noone will see you on it anyway!

It’s so sad to see how everything in your life revolves around exercise and food. I really hope that once you get into the swing of things at home you will find other things to occupy your time and thoughts rather than NEEDING to walk while you read blogs. Is it good to sit all day? Nope. But you don’t. You work out….for a very decent amount of time at a usually really high intensity. The average person only has time to do that, go to work, take care of their home/family, and call it a day. And yes, they probably sat at a desk all day. It’s odd how you, who claim to want to help people over their anxiety over exercise/food, are really just perpetuating it by creating the notion that working out once and going to work all day simply isn’t going enough….you should also have a standing desk. Very unrealistic for the average person and very triggering for a person who might be suffering from an ED.

  19. So clever! What a great idea – I’d love to have something like this at home for reading blogs, emails, etc. I do have a treadmill sitting at my parent’s house that never gets used… the wheels are turning!

  20. so cool!!

  21. This seriously is awesome! Definitely one of the most unique looking treadmill desks out there, but it definitely gets the job done! I bet you will love using it – once you start multitasking like this, you won’t ever want to go back to sitting!

  22. Wow! Very cool! Not sure I could type and walk (I have trouble doing two things at once sometimes)

  23. What an awesome idea! That is one way to stay effective and efficient! If anyone is looking for a good deal on treadmills to do the same, check out Nordic Track coupon or click the link above! Happy running!
