Jars of coconut oil are HUGE.
I have one, and I think it will take me 3 years to get through it if I only use it for cooking. I’m not 100% on the coconut flavor bandwagon, so I still use other oils for cooking a lot of the time.
Anyway, I know you can use coconut oil for a lot of things. I think I saw a homemade scrub from Alyssa before (I am definitely not reinventing the wheel), but then Caitlin brought it up during our GenerationKNOW shoot. I have no clue how we got on the topic of coconut oil scrubs since that was not the topic of the day.
I have VERY dry skin. My mom too. I put on lotion every day, and still my legs are scaly. I was a little intimidated by the idea of making my own scrub, but I’m also not working full time and the desire to not spend money on beauty products won out.
This is SO easy.

2 Ingredient Coconut Oil Moisturizing Body Scrub
Ingredients:
1/2 cup coconut oil 3/4 cup can sugar (course sugar works best, use whatever you have) Optional 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
Directions:
Scoop the coconut oil into a 1/2 cup measuring spoon (mine was very eyeballed because I didn’t smash it down smooth) and then place in a microwave save bowl.

Microwave coconut oil for about 20 seconds and then add sugar and optional almond extract.

Stir with a spoon until well mixed, then use!

I used mined all over my body in the shower and it was AWESOME. I didn’t even put on moisturizer afterward and my skin was so smooth! I experimented putting some in my hair, which totally eliminated any frizz, but make sure you wash it out well so your hair doesn’t look greasy!
This will separate and harden up, but the minute you scoop it into your hands or turn on the hot water in the shower it’s ready to use again.
Hello, easiest homemade beauty product ever.
- Have you ever made a beauty product at home?
- What’s your favorite moisturizer?

What a great idea!!! I usually use baby oil in the showere, but this scrub sounds amazing. I love that it eliminated frizz, did you put it in your hair and then wash it out or did you wash, put it in and then rinse? Just curious because I have curly hair that frizzes easily, but I have oily hair too, so I cant put anything to greasy in my hair.
Def wash afterward otherwise it’ll be super greasy!!
I find it fascinating how many different ways coconut oil can be used! This is just one more way I really need to consider getting some!
I’ve never made my own beauty products at all but this one looks super easy & doable!!
I’m glad to hear that you’re not on the coconut oil flavor bandwagon, either. I see it everywhere, but I just do not like the way it tastes when I cook with it! I use it as moisturizer, and I also put it on my hair as a deep conditioning treatment. I’ll have to try this scrub, too!
Dry skin is killer in the winter, for sure – my hands are constantly chapped and bleeding. (They’re always cold, too, which leads to plunging them into hot water, which leads to yet more chapping… argh!) Do you think this would work well as a hand scrub too?
Yeah I use it everywhere!
I’d be careful if your hands are already cracked, the abrasive scrub could make the skin breaks deeper. Have you ever tried applying a thick cream or e.g Vaseline (not sure if you have this in the US) on your hands, then putting cotton gloves over them before going to bed? It’s been working really well for me this winter!
I actually was doing that for a while and got out of the habit when I ran out of gloves! Gotta pick up some more. I’ve found Eucerin to work pretty well for that, though Vaseline has one with cocoa butter that’s nice too. Have you tried either of those?
I use coconut oil and Vaseline together on my hands and run it completely in…my hands have never looked better!!
I’m not a huge fan of Caitlin but you literally took a post she did and made it pinterest friendly, and are posting it as “original content”.
Hey! I actually never saw Caitlin do this and didn’t even reference it so if it’s a copy that was a total mistake! Ill check it out and see. Thanks for letting me know.
What do you do, scour the blogs all day and look for things to nitpick? Get a life Jennifer.
I made peppermint foot scrub for my mama for Christmas with sugar, coconut oil and peppermint extract – it was heavenly!
That is a HUGE container of oil. TJ’s has smaller jars for cheap
Ooh peppermint sounds good!!
I love coconut oil. I just bought a bottle a few weeks ago and use it as a makeup remover before my shower. I also just bought a bottle of coconut milk cleanser from Eminence which i love!
Ooh makeup remover! Good idea.
I used coconut oil on my hair all the time in India! It made it so soft! You’re right about washing it out well though, that can be especially hard when you’re showing with cold water in a bucket…
Cool! I saw this on healthytippingpoint and I’ve been meaning to try it. I have crazy dry skin too and have to use a ton of moisturizer.
Hey Clare, have you tried using a thick cream or emolient (which prevents loss of moisture from the skin) rather than a lotion? I think that would be the next step up Dermatologists would recommend
ooh thanks for the recommendation!
Love how easy this is!!! I have never attempted to make an at-home beauty product, it always intimidated me. This looks totally doable though!
I’ve never made my own product but I do buy lotions etc homemade from this woman on etsy – Pegasus soaps or something (if you want to know I’ll look it up) she’s great. My favorite moisturizer though – totally I switch back and forth between ponds and oil of Olay and I love how my face feels. And on a side note I use coconut oil for oil pulling its awesome my teeth are so much better
I love ponds!! What is oil pulling?
I don’t make it into a scrub, but just plain coconut oil is great for moisturizing AND for removing makeup. I use a simple jar of coconut oil from Whole Foods to remove my makeup, and it also moisturizes as a bonus. I was a little afraid that it would make me break out to do that, my skin has actually been quite soothed by the moisturizer and I have only good things to report!
I love putting coconut oil on at the end of a shower for smooth skin, but the sugar scrub sounds like such a great idea…and easy!!! I will for sure try it out!
So natural and healthy! I love it! Thanks for info.
I LOVE coconut oil. I have a big tub of it in the shower. At the end of my shower, I take a small amount and rub it on my arms and then legs to combat scaly, super dry skin. I get really itchy because of dry skin and it completely fixed that problem. Also, it got rid of that weird, bumpy skin on the underside of my upper arms, it’s so soft now!
Can you put it in the fridge or is it better to just leave it out on the counter?
My 9 year old just made this and we LOVE IT!! Thank you!
so good to hear!
Thank you for sharing!! I found your blog by googling body scrub with coconut oil and glad I found it! Really enjoying reading your posts!
i made a coconut honey lemon scrub, it was divine. since i discovered the wonders of honey and coconut oil i have not had to use lotion, nothing good in commercial lotion anyway.
