Have any of you tried one of the “Escape Room” places? We have them in St. Louis and I always see pictures of people going there for birthdays or just a different night out with friends. I haven’t gone yet, but I did get a little feel for it when I hosted a game night. My guy friends play boardgames all the time, but they are some of the trendy complicated ones I’ve never gotten into. I suggested a bunch of people come over one Sunday night as a way to unwind before a new week of classes, and we tried out Escape Room, The Game. It was a total blast! None of us had played before, so we spent some time reading the directions and setting up. There are four “themes” you can play, with increasing levels of difficulty. We started with the easiest, Prison Break, because we didn’t have any sense of how hard it would actually be. The others are Nuclear Countdown, Virus, and Temple of the Aztec. There is even an app you can download that plays suspenseful music and counts down as your time runs out! The game simulates a real Escape Room scenario, and is definitely meant for and difficult enough for teenagers or adults. You have 60 minutes to work together, uncover clues, and ultimately “escape” from the room by determining the correct four key combination. There are different envelopes and images, you are given hints every once in a while, and you definitely have to write things out and get creative to figure it out.
We all got SO into it! The first level was tricky but we finished with time left. Then some friends decided to play again (good sign!) and tried the hardest one. They were getting so stuck, and actually finally got it right with FIVE SECONDS left! It was intense!
We were actually all really surprised at how fun the game was, and how quickly the time passed while we were working to figure it all out. It was a perfect way to get our minds off of the stress of school, and something we’ll definitely play again to finish the other two themes.
I think I’ll bring it over to my parents’ house for the Christmas, too, given how much we’ve loved trying new board games down here on our Thanksgiving vacation. They are such a great way to spend time together!
Highly recommended if you’re looking for some fun family or friend activities over the holidays! Let me know what you think!
