Five Things Friday 2.1.13

I almost forgot about Five Things Friday this week! That’s what happens when I’m traveling. I get confused as to what day it is. I also feel like I have SO MANY POSTS to share that I forget about the little weekly ones I do. I’ll get to everything eventually!

Things I Ate:

Dessert after almost every meal while I was gone. Sure it was for interviews and a blog event, but it’s still vacation!

chocolate tart dessert

(that had a caramel base. heaven.)

Roasted Head of Cauliflower with some to-die-for sauce at Almond in NYC.

Beer. and wine. a lot. Because I was on vacation!

An unhealthy amount of trail mix right before bed one night. That made for an upset tummy and not very good sleep. Anyone else lose control with trail mix? The kind with m&ms…it’s impossible!

Veggies too! One of the schools I visited had an awesome salad bar. I had roasted butternut squash, roasted yellow squash, roasted brussel sprouts, marinated mushrooms, beets, and tofu on a bed of romaine. How’s that for college food?

Five Workouts:

Mon: 2.5 mile interval run and best body bootcamp strength workout

Tues: 5 mile run

Wed: 30 minute treadmill walk – my calves were SO SORE!

Thurs: 35 min elliptical. Was so NOT in the mood to exercise after so much travel, sugar, and drinks. But my dad actually asked me to go to the gym when he got home from work and I can’t turn that down! Didn’t go hard core, but getting moving felt good.

Fri: Plan on a run + best body boot camp

Five Posts I Loved:

New York Minute – Caitlin’s post is a great overview of the event I filmed in New York. She links to the Vagina video (yep, that’s right!) of one of the Kotex Ambassadors. Did you know Khloe Kardashian is part of GenerationKNOW too? How amazing!

On Japan’s School Lunch Menu – Very interesting read on how a different (and less obese) country handles school lunch.

The Little Things – Lindsay’s a genius.

PlateShare –>This is Brilliant. Please support Katie!

You May Need More Calories Than You Think –>This is hard one to remember (for me, too!) because it goes against everything the media teaches us, but is very true! If you aren’t eating enough, your body stores fat and slows your metabolism in case of “starvation mode”. The OPPOSITE of what we want to happen! I’d love to wear a heart rate monitor all day and test my true needs!

*BONUS: Reader Melissa told me about her friend Kelly that is running 360 miles in honor of her father who is battling cancer. Check out her story and help her cause!

Five Things Making Me Happy:

I got into another school!! Guys this is getting weird. One of the reasons I didn’t talk about my school plans was because I wasn’t confident I’d get in anywhere and didn’t want to feel like a failure. I am honestly so grateful to have choices, even though it’s going to make for some difficult decisions. I’ll explain more details really soon!

Good friends. GOSH I have the greatest college friends. Pat was a lifesaver in Philadelphia (um..he got up and turned his car on while he was getting ready for class in the morning just so it wasn’t freezing cold when I got up and had to drive to my interview.) And then I got to see about 10 other Notre Dame friends in NYC Wednesday night over a dinner full of hysterical laughter. I got asked “Clare what are you doing here?” and my response of course was “Ohh just talking about vaginas.” If only I were kidding.

Meeting other bloggers! Not only did I get to bond with Caitlin and Erin, but I got to meat tons of fashion bloggers. I don’t know much about that scene, but I will say the ladies were all so down to earth and had totally enviable outfits. Like I said, people are SO much cooler in person.

Buying a Ninja. Oh thank you sweet baby Jesus. After my blender broke my only option was one that looked like it belonged in a Fisher Price play set.  I need green monsters back in my life like whoa. I love sugar and beer just as much as the next person, but my skin and my digestive system would love a break.

Getting to do some speaking events with the doctor I’m a research assistant for. She works with a few medical schools here and asked if I’d help her out with some of her talks this spring. What an awesome opportunity!

  • Your Turn! What’s making you happy this week?

  1. congrats. I didn’t get in to any of my schools.

  2. Yay congrats on another school!
Your Friday posts have become my favorites!

  3. You’re still not saying where you got in, even though you got into all of them?! I’m too impatient for this!!

  4. That dessert looks amazing! Girl, don’t beat yourself up over the trail mix. It means your body needs the food. That’s what my RD is always reminding me of. You’re more likely to lose control because it means you’re low on fats or carbs or protein and when you finally give it the nutrients it needs, not only doe it taste good, but it also causes you to go crazy on it. It’s exactly what that article is about that you linked to- needing more calories than you think. It’s not an easy lesson to learn but it’s so necessary for your health. I struggle with the same thing.

    • Haha no no this was complete emotional verging on a binge eating…I had had plenty of food already! But I totally know what you mean about your body knowing what it needs! That happens to me sometimes too!

      • Nichole C. says:

I’m not trying to nitpick, but why did you say “haha” in response to Sarah’s comment? I didn’t pick up a joking tone from her (thoughtful) comment, and something “verging on a binge eating” doesn’t seem like something you should be laughing about either.

  5. Thanks for the shoutout! Congrats on getting into another school – that’s awesome :D

  6. Looks like you have had a pretty amazing week :) That college salad bar…how lucky are they!??! I read Brittany’s post about needing more calories and loved it too…it is sooo hard to stick to though!! I have a heart rate monitor and after seeing that post I have thought about wearing it on an “off” day and an “on” day. So interesting!

  7. I could eat a whole bag of trail mix (with M&Ms) in one sitting. It’s like, crack.

Also, I wouldn’t hate an email telling me WHERE YOU’RE GOING TO SCHOOL. I’m so pulling for VA. I don’t care that I’m being nosy. We’re blog friends, so I’m allowed to do that ;) I’m glad you’re getting accepted to places, that’s SO great!

    • Hey!! I don’t even known yet bc i still have I hear from some top choices! But no matter what it will be farrrr closer to you!

  8. gabriella says:

Congrats on another school! I think I’m going to wear my heart rate monitor for a day sometime soon – it should be interesting! But I want to do it on a rest day and I feel like I need to plan my outfit to work around the chest strap hah! Just a little constructive criticism….I think perhaps the reason why you got a lot of negative comments on those past posts and might on this one to is the fact that with everything you ate you need to excuse it “it’s okay becuase I was on vacation”…those things are okay whether you on vacation or not and I think those comments that you probably don’t even think about when you’re writing are what might come off to people as though something is a little off because a lot of people are probably thinking “I do that every day on vacation or not”. Of course, like you have said and I agree everyone has different needs and dietary goals, but I think if you stopped couching the desserts and trail mix statements with how its “okay” or “not okay” people wouldn’t think twice about what you’re eating! Just a thought :)

    • Hey! Thanks for the feedback. I think that eating dessert after each meal and drinking every day are NOT something I do or would recommend on a regular basis, so hopefully people will see that it’s just part of a balanced lifestyle. Eating a little cleaner on a normal schedule and splurging in exciting circumstances.

  9. You need to RELAX about what you eat. Actually not even about what you eat but the language and the guilt that’s constantly surrounding your posts about food. I eat a very clean diet, never eating crap like m and m’s or candy but I nourish my body with fuel all the time and I don’t deprive myself during the day only to binge later…. And I certainly don’t post about it constantly and say things like “I ate way too much trail mix”. I have a hunch that you use this blog as a way to validate your choices about what you eat, how much you work out, and the fact that you deserve sweets, but I think the only person you’re really trying to convince is yourself. I’ve read your blog for a while and now I keep ready because I’m waiting for you to close your blog and admit that you have an ED still or some form and disordered eating. I know this because I used to be the same way, just like every other person who posts on here. It’s a terrible image to portray for young girls looking to model healthy eating, and it always shocks me that you’re a nutrition coach when you don’t have a handle on your own food issues. At least for business purposes and to keep yourself credible, you should keep your disordered eating under wraps. And why do you keep promoting foods like protein bars and and cady full of GMOS and refined sugar when our diets should be based on plant based WHOLE foods?? Isn’t that what they teach you at your school?

    • YOU need to RELAX. It’s like every other post someone has to say the same exact thing. Stop psychoanalyzing every single thing Clare does. I’m sure if we had insight into your life, we could point out all of your “disorders” too. If you don’t like the blog, STOP reading it.

      • I never said I don’t have my own issues– but I come by them honestly and I don’t deny them. I also don’t broadcast them for everyone to see and use as a bad example. It must be exhausting for Clare to constantly be checking in with herself to make sure she works out enough, eats well enough, and deserves her treats and luxuries. I know this because I am the same way and its a painful habit I’m trying to break. It must be 100x more exhausting for her because she posts about it all the time.

        • And I’m sure the reason I can’t stop reading, like many other cannot, is like asking someone to look away from a car accident.

        • Hey ladies – no need to argue over this! I work on balance like everyone else.

          • I really think you overthink and obsess over this notion of balance, and I don’t think it’s possible to attain that positive equilibrium until you RELAX. Just a thought.

          • Totally agree. Wish it were something I was better at.

    • Hey! I absolutely struggle with emotional eating. I readily admit that and am publishing a post on it soon. I don’t share my day to day meals often so I know it’s hard for readers to see the whole picture.

  10. love it! and love that the word vaginas is in this post. :)

  11. Lauren Paradis says:

I just bought a ninja too!!!!! But the one that comes with a food processor and mini shakers as well. :) love it!!!

  12. that cake/tarte looks delicious!! I cannot buy trail mix, I cannot be trusted around it!

  13. Problem Solver says:

    Hey Clare,

I won’t divulge how I know this, but the person commenting on your blog as “gabriella” and several other names is named Pat from Philadelphia, PA.

    • This comment is amazing on so many levels. Either someone has genuinely blown the whistle on your real-life friend Pat being some kind of blog-stalker, or “Problem Solver” is just trying to insinuate as much for God-knows what reason. Either way…hilarious. Also, the name “Problem Solver”– like, some kind of bloggie-vigilante is out there solvin’ problems like “ERMAGHERD someone is posting comments under a false name!?” This is quality entertainment.

  14. Ah, don’t worry about the trail mix; it tasted good and you wanted to eat it right? Then don’t worry about it!

And I bet your Dad was happy to get you to go to the gym with him; family time is always fun!

  15. ah traveling is so much fun! i love it! glad you are enjoying your time! 5 things: cake batter protein powder arrived at my door (amazing), snuggling with my dog keeps me warm in this frigid weather, TGIF, stoked for bikram tomorrow, and go 49ers! :)

  16. Yay! Congrats on getting into another school! I know you’re going to find the perfect fit for you.

It was so great meeting you! I wish we had more time to hang out, but I’m sure we’ll meet up again! I’m excited to read everyone’s recaps on Monday. And I want to eat that caramel chocolate pie through the screen! ;p

Yay for a new blender! I’ve heard really good things about Ninja blenders. If my parents didn’t get the Vitamix for us Josh and I were going to get that one. It is way better than most, and 10000x better than the old sad one Josh is currently using.

  17. Just for fun since your dad is wearing an ND jacket…

How do you make Notre Dame eggs?

Put them in a bowl two times too big for themselves and then beat them to death for three hours.

(I know you are like the HUGEST fan EVER, but I had to lighten the mood with all this ED talk.)

  18. Congrats, Clare! I think we are our own toughest critics, but I was pretty confident you would have choices. I completely understand the fear of failure. I can’t wait to hear what your final choice is. Going back to school is so exciting!

  19. Congrats on getting into another school :) Once you’ve heard back from all of your programs, would you consider writing a post with advice regarding the the application process? It seems like you would have a lot of good advice, considering that you have been accepted into two extremely competitive, highly ranked programs (assuming that your acceptances are the programs that I think they are).

    • Thank you! I absolutely intend to do that so I can answer questions and help any other that are considering it!!

  20. I really love that article on the Japanese school diets. Thanks for sharing! And congrats on getting into another school…sounds like its going to be hard to decide!
