This is actually a weird week for my Internal Medicine team because our call day falls tomorrow. Each team is on call every five days, and since we are on call on Saturday that means we have to work post-call on Sunday. As students we usually work Saturday and have Sunday off, but not this time!
I actually already had tickets booked to a wedding in Seattle, so I got permission to miss work on Sunday and make it up on a later day that I would have had off. So I’ll leave for Seattle tomorrow (Saturday) night, the wedding is Sunday, then we have Monday off for Labor Day and I’ll be back to the hospital on Tuesday. So thankful the med school is flexible and accommodating since it’s hard to make plans ahead of time this year!
(My boyfriend sent me that pic from Seattle. He’s already there and says it’s gorgeous right now!!)
Internal medicine has been awesome but exhausting. We see so many different patients and most have a ton of things going on. So far we’ve had necrotizing pancreatitis, lots of congestive heart failure, alcohol withdrawal, cellulitis, COPD exacerbations, urinary tract infections, altered mental status and more. All of the lab values and things we have to monitor make my head spin, but I’m slowly getting the hang of all of it.
My team is really amazing. Our interns are super nice and our senior resident is an amazing teacher. I have learned so much already! We ask and get asked questions all the time while we are rounding on patients, but have also gotten taught specifically about ekgs, reading chest X-rays, types of anemia, when to use different antibiotics. And a huge part of what I learn is just acronyms for things and how the hospital runs! Who do I call to do this? What little tasks have to be done before this person can get discharged? We help out when we can, but unfortunately we aren’t allowed to do a fair amount of the required work since we aren’t doctors yet.
I can’t believe it’s only been 4 days. I can’t imagine how much more I’ll know by the end of 8 weeks!
It’s Friday, so I thought I’d share some of the things that I’ve been digging this past week. Here are my Friday favorites!
College football is back!!
The best time of the year!! I’ll be working most Saturdays and so can’t make it up to Notre Dame with my family until after Internal Medicine, but I’m hoping to be finished at the hospital in time to watch the games on TV! Hoping for a decent season out of my Irish. Who’s your team??
Becoming an Expert Yoga Teacher
Oh man he cracks me up. This makes me miss teaching!
My mom buys this salad dressing and now I use it too. It’s just perfectly light and a teeny bit sweet. I’ve been using it on my salads for lunch all week — mixed greens, bell pepper, carrots, turkey, goat cheese and a little bit of this drizzled on top. Mmm!
XL Kombucha Bottles!
I love having a little bit of Kombucha each day, but it’s expensive and I always drink the whole 16 oz bottle if I open it. Whole Foods carries extra large bottles of GTs Trilogy and Gingerade and now I can just pour myself a small glass at night. It lasts me a long time and the price is so much better than individual bottles!
Dark chocolate dipped in almond butter.
My nightly snack of choice this week.
Five Minute Face & Beautycounter Labor Day Deal
I got my Five Minute Face in the mail and am obsessed! It seriously is so easy – the foundation brush makes the Tint Skin application a breeze, the concealer is phenomenal, and I am now a lip gloss convert. The stuff feels so good on! In a shocking twist, I might actually like the Tint Skin more than the Dew Skin, if that’s possible!! Here’s what I wear:
Beautycounter is offering a free face oil when you spend $150 for Labor Day Weekend! Pick from either plumping, brightening, or balancing, each a $68 value! I have done so much reading about the company, its values and its process for selecting ingredients and could not be more impressed. Transparency and scientific research are both hugely important to me, and this company does not slack in those areas. They will use any ingredient – synthetic or natural – so long as it is proven SAFE, and go the extra mile that most companies don’t bother to do. I’d encourage you to read more on their website, and of course ask me any questions!
I went to Target yesterday because I needed to buy coffee (excuses excuses) and was able to try on their new stuff. A New Day was so picked over already!! I got this little black skirt with front tie and a fun black dress I think I’ll get a ton of use out of, but was also eyeing this chic paneled midi skirt and wish they had these pants in my size!
