Another Day In The Life coming your way!
I thought it’d be good to do a post on how I balance classes with boards studying in these few weeks leading up to our designated study period. I never feel like I get enough done, and this day was a little more play than usual, but still a fairly decent look. So here’s a look at a Monday in the life of a second year medical student!
7:42am: – Wake up to a text from a friend. I’m usually up around 7, but classes start an hour later today so I let myself sleep in a bit!
7:45-8:20: Make coffee. Chug a glass of water. Oil pull while coffee is brewing. Wash face with Rodan & Fields (trying Reverse again to get ride of those dark spots on my cheeks), do hair/make up/ get dressed. Write an Insta. Alli and Winston come downstairs and let me know I have to move my car for street cleaning.
8:20: Move car.
8:30: Make breakfast and pack food for the day. I prep a salad with leftover steak from dinner with my parents, get the stuff for some oatmeal and peanut butter as a snack, and throw in some almonds, an orange, a cheese stick, and two chocolate squares.
8:45: Breakfast! 2 eggs on avocado toast + coffee with collagen. (I’m trying to do the collagen regularly to see if it helps with my knee, or digestion, or anything really. Here’s a post from Julie on what collagen is supposed to do!) I read She Reads Truth while eating and then start this post.
9:00am: I’m upstairs at my desk for some review before class. I am slowly going through the Biochem section of First Aid, which is just torture. I put on a spotify playlist and then my computer reminds me tomorrow is Valentine’s Day. THANKS.
9:45am: Coffee into a to-go mug and off to class!
10:00-12:00: Class. Today lectures are on on nerve injuries and fibromyalgia. I diagnose myself with a long thoracic nerve injury from carrying a super heavy shoulder bag all the time. Typical med student.
12:00-1:00pm: Find a desk in the library and set up for more Biochem review and lunch.
1:10pm: Toxicology lecture started late because of a lunch event in the auditorium. Our teacher is making lots of Star Wars jokes and rapping – it’s a good thing when they keep lectures fun!
2:40pm: I leave class and go chat with a friend in one of the study rooms for a few minutes. He teaches me how to download Office for free on my new laptop. Then back to the library!
3:00pm: I grab some of my almonds and decide to start reviewing some micro. I downloaded a deck of Anki flash cards based off of Sketchy Medical and it really helps me review the different bugs and drugs I’ve studied.
3:30pm: I finished an Anki deck and switch to watching more Sketchy Micro videos. Fungi today.
4:45pm: Finish a Sketchy section, and it is so hot in the Library that I can’t take it anymore!! I decide to leave and run to the grocery store before studying a little more at home.
5:00pm: Shopping at ALDI. It’s my go-to these days! SO much cheaper and most weeks it has everything I need. I’ve loved it ever since I went to their Chicago headquarters a few years ago and learned about the company and how they operate and manufacture. AND they are re-doing their stores soon so they’ll be more modern and clean!
5:40: back at home. I unload groceries, change into workout clothes, and put some homemade soup in the microwave.
5:52pm: Sitting down to an early dinner and more studying! I do a set of flashcards on the Sketchy Fungi videos I just watched to nail them in. I also eat some raspberries and chocolate chips.
7:00pm: Leave for boxing. I carpool with my roommate and we are meeting a bunch of other friends there. Having Class Pass this month has been SO fun!
7:30-8:30pm: Title Boxing!! SO fun. So cathartic.
8:40pm: We are pulling out of the parking lot when we hear,”WAIT!!!” and Torie runs over to tell us they are going to Jeni’s for ice cream. Well….twist my arm.
9:00-9:40pm: AH-mazing ice cream treat! I got a rocky road and gooey butter cake. We all chatted and told stories and laughed. Doesn’t happen enough this year, and won’t as much with boards studying and then all of us being on different rotations in the hospital. I’m enjoy the time together while I can!
10:00pm: Home. Play with dogs for a minute. Shower.
10:20pm: I’m in bed working on this post. Feeling all kinds of guilt that I got ice cream instead of coming home to study more, but I literally feel that guilt any time I’m not studying these days. Part of the process, I think!
11:00pm – Bed time!
