I’ve got another Day In The Life for you! I got a request for more of these, so I have another one in the works too.
I started doing Day In The Life posts so that pre-med students (or just anyone curious) could know what a typical day of med school was like. I had no idea what to expect before I started! What I’ve learned is that each day is different! We don’t have to go to class (our classes are recorded) so I have a lot of freedom in my days. I love that, but it’ll end soon when I start clinicals. Enjoying it while I can!
This was last Wednesday, which was not a regular day for me. I subbed a yoga class and so didn’t attend or watch my classes in the morning like usual, and I also don’t have a test for a few weeks so there isn’t quite as much stress and studying right now. Here’s how it went!
6:50am: Wake up before my alarm. It makes me think about the sleep talk I gave last week at a local community center and how waking up with our natural sleep cycles is best. I lay in bed and check my phone for a little while. One day I’ll stop doing that…
7:05am: Up and getting ready for the gym!
7:25am: Out the door, Vega pre-workout in hand. It’s COLD today!
7:40am: Workout! I warm up with 5 minutes of jogging then 15 minutes of incline sprints – 30 sec on, 30 sec off. I use 3.0 incline and 9.5mph speed. It felt unusually hard today! Then I do an upper body workout:
- Bench press + tricep dips.
- Lat pull downs + upright rows
- Decline spider push ups + rear delt flies
- Bicep curls + arnold presses
8:35am: Leave the gym. I grab a smoothie from Smoothie King for breakfast. I almost always get the Nutty Super Grain (I even came up with my own version!) but was feeling something different. Two employees recommended the Mango Kale one, subbing vanilla whey protein for the vegan protein power. It’s SO GOOD!
9:10am: Arrive at Metro Power Yoga to sub Slow Power. I turn on the heat, write my quote for class on the board, sync my phone to the Bose speaker for music, and start to check people in. It was a small class of 5 people, but was really fun. They were in the mood for a workout and totally kicked butt! I got lots of good feedback after class which always feels good.
10:55am: I have errands to run so I’m just getting them done while I’m already out. I have to get a front headlight fixed and I sit in the waiting room and use their wifi to start this post and send some emails.
11:50am: I’m at Fedex Office getting some boards review stuff bound. It has to be separated into four separate books because it’s so much. I got some school work done while waiting, but the wifi didn’t work that well.
12:45pm: Home and starving! Didn’t expect things to take that long. I grab a random bar out of my pantry, eat it while finishing up the last bit of a project I was working on, then hop in the shower.
1:15pm: Make a salad and sit down to start watching today’s lectures. Todays are on GI malignancies and viral liver infections.
2:30pm: Finished a lecture. Chat with my roomie for a little. Dry my hair before starting another lecture. Make a cup of coffee because I realize I haven’t had any today and I just can’t let that happen.
2:45pm: Decide to play with my curling wand while I watch another lecture. Having something to do actually helps me focus better when I’m listening to lectures. Sometimes I’ll stretch if it’s post-workout!
3:30pm: Finish another lecture. Decide to take some blog pictures while it’s still light out. I photograph some of my new (so so comfy!) Wear Figs gear as well as the new VEGA drink mixes I got sent. I make a probiotic drink mix while It at it, then heat up a baked sweet potato with some cinnamon and peanut butter for a snack.
4:00pm: On the couch watching the third lecture from today.
4:15pm – Brief break to hang some Christmas decorations.
5:00pm Finished lecture. I start checking things off my life – worked on my FAFSA, ordered a new battery for my car key fob, printed a photo for my USMLE application, and shared this post on my Facebook page.
5:45pm: Back to studying! I’m reading the syllabus now, which is basically our textbook for each class.
6:30pm: I heat up some of the Pizza Spaghetti Pie I made for dinner and eat it while I keep reading. Winston licks my bowl:) I am craving somethings sweet so I grab a chocolate chip cookie dough Larabar for dessert and move to the couch to keep reading there.
7:30pm: My brain is fried. My roommate comes downstairs so I decide to take a break from studying for a bit and maybe pick up a little later before bed.
8:21pm: I’ve got a class of wine and My Best Friend’s Wedding is on. My roommate had never seen it!! I can’t help but sing along with “Say A Little Prayer.”
9:30pm: Movie is over. I get ready for bed then start watching some Pathoma videos for some more review.
10:15pm: Read a little of 10% Happier before bed. Then lights out!
