Saturday morning was one of the funniest I’ve had in a long time.
We were all a little slap happy from little sleep and a late night dancing, but had to get up and moving to drive our two rental cars from San Francisco to Napa. We decided we wanted to drive over the Golden Gate bridge since we hadn’t made it there the day before, but between the two cars we couldn’t seem to get the same GPS directions. We were driving through an unknown traffic-y city, not really knowing who had the right directions and therefore who should follow whom, and somehow ended up in Chinatown for a while. Totally struggling. Then an HOUR LATER we finally made it out of San Francisco. I swear we just drove in circles. Luckily we had left our selves plenty of time and were giddy enough that we just laughed our butts off about it instead of getting frustrated.
So finally, after a stupid long tour of San Francisco and “I Don’t Mind” on repeat….Golden Gate:
Then soon after, NAPA! Our first stop was Pine Ridge Vineyards where we had a special treat. A friend’s parents are part of the wine club there and we got a special tour of their cave system and a wine tasting with meal pairing from their chef!
THE FLOWERS. Everywhere. Beautiful.
Caves. Apparently this is a growing trend — building caves under your winery because it saves you on property taxes and it is a pretty energy-efficient way to store wine barrels.
So yeah, we were totally spoiled. The reds were all different cab savs, and my favorites were #2 and #4 – the 2012 Napa Valley Cab Sav and the 2011 Oakville Cab Sav, respectively.
My favorite food pairing was #1 – the fatty duck with spicy arugula and tart cherries was INSANE. And also I loved the wild mushroom tortilla with pistachio salsa. I want to recreate that.
We didn’t have specific plans for the rest of the afternoon, and Pine Ridge recommended we head to Mumm for some bubbles. Perfect idea — it was 70 and sunny and the perfect day for some sparkling wine on a beautiful patio.
Most of us ordered one of their samplers that came with 3 sparkling wines and then a 4th of your choice. I got the 2006 DVX Extra Brut and it was AWESOME. I love love super dry wines!
At this point we were ready to head home, check into our little house near downtown Napa, and get some food! We were able to walk to all the restaurants and were recommended a great mediterranean place called Tarla where I inhaled grape leaves, hummus, babaganoush and some meat balls.
On the walk home we stopped in a cute boutique and LB saw my eyeing this ring and surprised me by buying it for me!! I love it because it’s a “C” but also looks like a horseshoe which reminds me of Louisville <3
And then froyo, because when you’re with 9 girls at least someone will say we have to get it. I got birthday cake, mint and white chocolate topped with cookie dough, peanut m&ms, chocolate chunks and a few of those freaking delicious pink bear cookies.
That night we did a total stereotypical girl thing and drank some wine while watching Fifty Shades of Grey at the house and falling asleep before midnight. It was perfect.
Next up – Napa wine tasting day 2!
