I had always wanted to experience New York City at Christmas! It just seemed so magical with the big trees and department store windows and everything all lit up. Obviously I was really excited when I planned to visit my boyfriend here right before Christmas, and even more excited when he said he wanted to take me to see the Rockettes!!
We got into the city mid afternoon yesterday and walked around Bryant Park for a little bit. We saw the tree, the ice skaters, and wandered some shops looking for Christmas ornaments for my mom. The food smelled SO good (churros, waffles, hot chocolate!) but we were waiting for dinner.
Next we walked up to Radio City Music Hall to see the famous Rockettes in the Christmas Spectacular! The theatre is massive. SO huge with three levels of balcony! And the show was so fun. Pretty cheesy at times, but phenomenal dancing and the special effects wereimpressive. It SNOWED inside at one point!! I smiled so big watching the Rockettes kick their legs around, but I think our favorite part was when they dressed up as nutcrackers and marched perfectly in line.
It was dark out when the show ended, so we were able to go see the Rockefeller tree all lit up. It is just massive. How do you find a tree that big? There were more ice skaters there, and even a big light show on the side of Saks Fifth Avenue across the street! We fought the crowds all night and were able to walk by Saks up close to see all the windows decorated. It was all so over the top and wonderful.
Fully satisfied by the New York City Christmas display, and pretty cold and sick of crowds, we decided to skip the rest of the store windows and walked up to meet friends for dinner at Umami Burger. Burgers and beer was a great end to the day.
I’m so glad I got to experience it all at least once. It’s the type of thing you probably don’t need to do every year, but it’s a fun classic Christmas memory to have. Have you ever been to NYC at Christmas?
((PS – I’ve got TONS of topical posts to write over this break, so look forward to some good stuff coming soon!))
