Classes start again today, and I’ve been using the past few days to get a plan together for this spring. I have 14 weeks until I take step one of boards. Just typing that freaks me out. That seems so short.
I have two more classes left – Endocrinology then Skin, Bone & Joint – so for the next two months I’ll be balancing studying for classes and studying for boards. Once classes are finished I have time off dedicated to boards studying before I take the exam in April.
Up until this time I’ve been able to stay fairly relaxed with my daily schedule. I could sleep in if I needed it, take an afternoon off to run errands, sub morning yoga classes, etc. From now on, though, I’m going to be more strict with my routine. Time is at a premium and I can’t afford to let anything get in the way of my preparation.
My plan is to study for boards in the morning, take a break for lunch, and then spend the afternoon at school studying for class. I haven’t decided whether I want to do morning, lunch or evening workouts (or mix it up.) I’m going to use the Forest app on my phone to time my studying and prevent distractions, and may try an app that blocks certain websites too. I also haven’t decided how much blogging I’ll be doing. I have a feeling I’ll stop completely during my designated studying period, and I’ll just have to see how it goes up until then.
I also start a once weekly preceptor ship today. I’ll be spending each Tuesday afternoon with two pediatricians getting some extra practice with histories, physicals, SOAP notes, and presenting patients. I’m so excited – I think I’ll even see my mom sometimes!
I’ll share more boards studying details as I get closer to the dedicated study period, or if I come across any special tips or tricks that are working for me. Is there anything specific you guys would like to know about?
For now it’s time to hit the books! Have a great day!
