Speed Work, Treadmill Desks & Flu Shots

Keep those Love Grown Hot Oats entries coming!

Yesterday morning I had a boat load of phone calls to make. NO FUN. I now have a dentist appointment, a car appointment (Safety recall), have talked to my financial advisor, figured out why I’m still being billed for cable in Dallas, and have changed my address with Chase Bank.

I had breakfast before all that. A change from my oatmeal! This was Greek yogurt with vanilla and cinnamon, banana, and almond butter.

Also, I stood at my computer for lots of the morning, but REALLY want to figure out how to set up our treadmill with a computer desk. I wouldn’t use it all the time, but since I’m going to be working from home so much this spring it’d be nice to get a little movement. It doesn’t even count to get up to go to the bathroom because it is right next to me:) I found THIS online, but don’t really want to pay for it. Maybe I need to go to lowes….

Around noon I left for the gym where I ran 5 miles and then completed Strength A from Best Body Bootcamp. For my run, I used my increasing interval run but picked my “recovery” pace up to 7.0 from 6.7. Once I finished my intervals I was close to 5 miles so I sprinted at the end to finish up in less than 40 minutes. I had to run 3 minutes at a 6:30 pace, but I did it!!! I know I need to keep pushing myself like this to make progress with my speed.

I brought lunch and ate it in the car (egg, hummus, and spinach on a bagel, snap peas, and an apple) because I was heading straight to get my flu shot. I usually am so good about it but totally forgot this year. My doctor mother will have none of that (especially with the huge outbreaks) so I made sure to get one today. Shots (and needles in general) don’t bother me, so it was super quick. My arm is a little sore though.

Then at home I talked to P for a bit. Figuring out travel plans when the Navy dictates your schedule is nootttt easy, but I think I get to see him soon!

The rest of the afternoon was spent working on a few presentation proposals that are due at the end of the month, and around 6:30 my stomach started grumbling for dinner. AND I AM TERRIBLE! I told myself I’d take a picture of dinner since I forgot at lunch…but then I didn’t. I went super simple and had black bean soup with spinach and tempeh mixed in, and baby carrots on the side.

night relax

Now (it’s 7:10pm as I write this) I’m on the couch with tea and about to get something sweet for dessert. I have a client at 8, so the end of the Bachelor will be DVRed.

Night!

  • Do you do any speed work?
  • Have you gotten a flu shot? (I know some people aren’t down with vaccines)

Comments

  1. I asked for a standing desk at work only half joking, alas my company is not quite on board yet haha.

Drop Dead Healthy by A.J. Jacobs is not only a hilarious read, but he details how to make your own treamill desk almost free of charge!
He used one for the two years he wrote the book!

  2. i haven’t gotten the flu shot in a couple years and have not gotten the flu (knock on wood). itz definitely a gamble for me since i teach elementary school, but so far itz worked out! (and hopefully i’m not jinxing myself!)

  3. I have never gotten the flu shot, but my family and I were just debating about this the other night. Did you hear that they are thinking of forcing doctors and nurses into getting the shot? I’ve never been a fan of it but it sounds like things are getting a little out of control. Gotta keep that immune system up!

    • And it’s super bad on the east coast! My parents, as doctors, have always been very PRO flu shot (And all vaccines) so I have always gotten one. Safe travels today!

    • I’m a nursing student and we’re required to get vaccinated (as are all hospital employees at the hospital where we have clinical). I think it’s a good idea. It’s important to protect our patients. Anyway, I won’t get on my vaccination soapbox but people have a lot of misconceptions about vaccines and these misconceptions lead to major public health crises in our country.

    • I’m in nursing school too and we were also required to get flu shots. There were also a few nurses in northern Indiana who were fired for refusing to get flu shots! I’ve never been a fan of them, but it’s so easy to catch stuff in hospitals.

  4. I haven’t gotten a flu shot but my om keeps asking me when I am going ot get it.. I am torn.. In a way I think I take the subway I should get it but at the same time I am so hesitant because of all the crap they put in it.

  5. Do I hear a challenge? Figure out how to DIY a treadmill computer desk and then post a tutorial on the blog? ;-) That would be kinda fun though!
The flu is running rampant here. I’m BFF with my hand sanitizer right now.

    • hahah I am picturing me with a saw and a drill out in my garage. I think it might have to happen.
      Good luck staying well!!

  6. I hate flu shots but my mom is extremely susceptible to getting sick so we have to get them when they first come out in October. I always opt for the nose spray, though. I’m a chicken ;)
Also hate speed work, but I can’t weasel my way out of that. My coach wouldn’t be happy with me.

  7. you should ask Andrea@ a doctor in the house about her method for keeping the computer on the treadmill on a budget ;-)
i t may involve a pair of tights

  8. I forget how much work moving is. There are so many little things to do. And I love the idea of the treadmill desk. I want one of those!!

  9. YES to the flu shot! EVERY YEAR. I am not down with getting the flu, so the shot is pretty worth it to me. I sit all day for my job (mental health counselor), so I love to walk once I get home. Having a standing desk at a treadmill would be great!

  10. I had the same problem! I wanted a treadmill desk that didn’t cost and arm and a leg… now I just use the lid of an old large storage bucket and lay it across the handles. I may or may not be using it as I type this ;)

  11. STILL have not gotten my flu shot yet!!! I usually get the flu mist (for kids) but haven’t. I think I’ll have to suck it up and get the shott this year tho!

  12. My mom was just telling me yesterday how bad the flu is that’s going around this year and that I need to get the shot. I am TERRIFIED of needles but she said you can get this spray up your nose instead? Is it just as effective? I also love the idea of getting a laptop desk thing for your treadmill..I want one!

  13. I’m sure I had flu shots as a kid, but I remember getting one in college and I was hard core sick for the next 36 hours. NOT cool, so I skip it. I’ve heard this year is really bad so I considered getting one, but so far I’ve been fine (crossing my fingers, toes, arms, legs, etc. that I don’t get it!).

  14. The flu shot is really bad for you and it’s not even proven that it prevents this years strain of the flu because they use old strains from years before. I’m really surprised you get it because you’re a holistic health coach and I thought they would have taught you about how bad it is, as well as alternatives to the shot. First of all, that’s not even how our body naturally develops antibodies to a virus, so it’s bypassing the basic membranes that a normal flu would have to pass and second, It’s a huge money grab! The government funds companies to develop the flu shot, they advertise it, and then they collect the money. There’s a ton of information out there about the additives and negative side-effects of these shots, as well as the fact that there is a lack of proof that they actually work! I’m in a holistic nutrition program in Canada and we’ve been taught by Naturopaths about the negatives of these kinds of immunizations as well as the different things we can do with how we lead our lives that will prevent us from getting sick (eating well, getting sleep, taking care of yourself, exercise etc.). I do these things and live in Toronto, ride the subway, interact with people all the time, and I have never been sick for more than 24 hours, and it’s never been extreme. Most people who get a cold think they have the flu but the reality is that its grossly exaggerated, and the flu and a cold (which can have the same symptoms) are entirely different things.

    • I agree with you, Marcy. I’ve never gotten the flu shot. I don’t know what is in it and I’m leery. Nice to read another perspective on here. I was thinking I was the only skeptic amidst the gung ho commenters on this post.

  15. Here’s a website with more information: vran.org. You can do a search for flu shots and all sorts of articles come up.

  16. Isn’t a treadmill desk for people who work in an office environment all day and don’t have time to get out and exercise? You have the flexibility to work from home and fit in multiple workouts a day .. just saying that seems like overkill.

    • Hey – yes that’s the premise of the idea. Sitting all day is bad for you, even if you get in exercise. And even though I’m not in an office, I still sit all day at my computer (just at home!). I obviously could take more time to workout and walk around during the day, but then I wouldn’t get much done. I know I wouldn’t use the treadmill all the time, but to have the option for a little movement when I have a long day of sitting would be nice!

  17. What is the recipe for your chocolate Greek yogurt? Specifically how much cocoa and how much yogurt/stevia do you use?g

    Thanks!

    • I don’t measure any of it! I use one container of greek yogurt, a few drops of Nunaturals stevia, and a spoonful of cocoa powder. I would GUESS it’s 6-8oz yogurt, 1/2 teaspoon stevia, and 1 TBSP cocoa powder.
