Easily the most common questions I get are about my studies at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition.
I enrolled with IIN in May 2011 and am currently about half way through the program. I just received my certification to begin seeing clients in the 6-month program, which you can read more about at my website. In April 2012 I will graduate as a Certified Holistic Health Coach registered with the American Association of Drugless Practitioners.
I’m going to do my best to tell you all about IIN in this post, but again please feel free to email me at email@example.com with any questions you have or if you are interested in working with me. I know I had tons of questions before I enrolled and I am more than happy to chat with you.
**note: much of this information is taken from the website, but I’ve edited it and added my own information as well**
What Is IIN?
The Institute for Integrative Nutrition is the world’s largest nutrition school. It was started by Joshua Rosenthal, MScED almost 20 years ago with the simple idea that if he could change what people ate, he could change the world. IIN started with a small classroom of people, but now offers a life-changing online course allowing students from all over the world to receive their health coach certification. The school is now 16,000 strong with students from over 80 countries.
The health movement has come into its own. People are catching on and becoming more aware. What was once considered alternative is now becoming part of the mainstream approach.
What Certification Do You Get?
Students of IIN graduate with a Health Coaching Certificate, representing their education, knowledge and experience. As the world’s largest nutrition school and the leading health coach training program, Integrative Nutrition is known for high caliber graduates who change the lives of their clients and communities.
Students who register for the SUNY CEU Certificate program and successfully complete the IIN graduation requirements for Integrative Nutrition’s health coach certification are also eligible to earn a certificate degree awarded by the State University of New York at Purchase College
Toward the end of Integrative Nutrition’s online course, students will have the option to register with the American Association of Drugless Practitioners an independent professional association for holistic healthcare professionals. This third party accreditation will provide board certification and a certificate of membership and professional affiliation. There is a one-time fee payable to the AADP.
At the recent Fall Conference we heard from a professor at the University of Indiana who is working with IIN to achieve even more national accreditation. IIN is recognized by the APPLE store and can get you discounts on computers. That’s the best part to me:)
How Does The Distance Program Work?
The main method of learning with IIN is through a little red Ipod that they send you upon registration. It is pre-loaded with all of the lectures and videos that’d you’ll need. Each week a new “module” is released and you then go to that module on your ipod to listen to the classes. There are typically about 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours of listening each week, usually split into 5 to 10 lectures so you can do a little bit at a time.
Along with the lectures, the OEF or Online Education Forum will include power point presentations and hand outs to go with each lecture. It’s helpful to follow along with these while you’re listening and prevents a lot of vigorous note taking. The OEF also has any homework (usually just suggestions of new nutrition tricks to try or discussions to participate in).
There are 4 tests throughout the year, each taken online. You have two chances to complete the one hour test. They require you to pay attention to your lectures, but are not difficult at all.
Other helpful aspects of the online program include your own personal health coach that you are assigned and will speak with 8 times over the course of the year. This person has been through the program and is an incredible resource for any questions you may have about school as well as any personal health concerns you may have. Mine is like my best friend and therapist. She knows my life story.
Lastly there are “open sessions” once a month. These are led by IIN staff and allow you to sign in online and connect with other students.
In total, Your Program includes:

What Do IIN Graduates Do?
Quick answer: EVERYTHING. The main career for graduates is a certified holistic health coach, either full or part-time, that helps client’s achieve their health and lifestyle goals.
Does this sound like you?–> Anywhere you go people need and want to talk about their health. You know this probably as much as I do. You know who you are – you’re the go-to person for nutrition advice. You love helping others become healthier and happier even if you’re not getting compensated. But why not get paid for what you love doing? That’s what being a Health Coach allows you to do.
A Health Coach is a wellness authority and supportive mentor who motivates individuals to cultivate positive health choices. Health Coaches educate and support clients to achieve their health goals through lifestyle and behavior adjustments. Proper health coach training programs and health coach certification ensure that Health Coaches know how to work with diverse groups of people and equips them with the tools necessary to best fit the needs of their clients.
“The primary objectives of health coaching are to educate the patient regarding self health management and to encourage patients in taking a more proactive role in staying healthy.”-Medical Economics, Nov 2010
There is now a huge demand for Health Coaches. Not only are doctors hiring more Health Coaches than ever before, but patients are learning that working with a Health Coach is one of the most effective ways to improve their health. And as more and more medical professionals recognize the vital importance of Health Coaches, the demand will grow. Dr. Michael Roizen recently wrote a Huffington Post article echoing this notion saying Health Coaching is the key to new job creation.
However, some graduates don’t just work as health coaches. They put on corporate wellness programs and workshops, they write books, blogs or articles, they work at wellness centers along with other health professionals, they are personal chefs, they create their own unique career. Truly this certification opens so many doors and will give you so many ideas about what you can do with your passion. I’m not entirely sure what I will end up doing with my certification, but I am SO excited to have this education because I know I want to work with health and wellness in some form.
It is VERY possible to make a prosperous career out of health coaching, but it’s not necessary. You could use this as some additional income to supplement another job if that’s what works best for you.
How Much Does IIN Cost?
IIN is extremely reasonable and often Joshua jokes that the cost of tuition could JUST cover the amazing website they give us. If you’re interested please email me and I’ll give you more payment information. And please know they offer financing and are often running scholarships and discounts on tuition.
Furthering Your Education?
The Institute for Integrative Nutrition also has educational agreements with SUNY Purchase, Maryland University of Integrative Health, Goddard College and Excelsior College, among others, for graduates who wish to continue their education to achieve a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
I hope that helps answer a lot of your questions about the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. I’m sure it also sparked a lot of other questions as well, so please email me if you’d like! I absolutely adore the program and what it stands for and am more than happy to share my experience and excitement with you.
