Happy weekend, friends!
If you’ve been following along with my Insta-stories, you know that I am so happy that I have Saturday off! 3rd year is strange because they tell us we are allowed up to 3 days off for illness, etc, in each rotation, but usually they make you makeup any days you miss. So basically no days off.
I have a friend’s wedding next weekend (that I’m playing my harp at, which is so fun!) which means I’d be missing a weekend day of work. I was expected to have to work 13 days straight to make up for it, but on Friday my (awesome amazing) attending told me I could still take a day off this weekend. ALLELUIA! Having a day off to get some sleep, grocery shop, clean up around the house and get in a good chunk of studying makes such a huge difference in my mentality.
So welcome to the Weekly Recap! I am going to try to share more about my weeks with you all in these, similar to my former Five Things Friday posts. Let me know if you guys like these and what you do and don’t want to see more of!
Side Note: Current countdown — 4 days until I see my boyfriend, 14 days until my Internal Medicine shelf exam, 15 days (!!) until I turn 30. Holllllly moly.
Just a few favs from the week.
PaleOMG Pizza Spaghetti Pie – maybe my favorite cooler weather recipe?? Make it on the weekend to last me all week, and have used a variety of different meats / veggies in it.
Supercharge Me Cookies! My sweet tooth is raging as ever (I try reduce my sugar intake for the health benefits but any form of restriction doesn’t jive well with me) and I feel much better about all the nutrition PLUS yumminess these provide. I’ve added both banana and pumpkin and they are always great!
2 Ingredient Pancakes – Just recently getting back into these for breakfast! I make it and then bring it to work in tupperware to eat while I’m reviewing charts.
Vega One shakes – Always. Love adding some coffee for an extra kick. Easiest way to pack some nutritional punch to my day.
Mon: PLNK via classpass for my weekly dose of core insanity
Tues: Mile run + treadmill walk while studying
Wed: Vinyasa at Yogasix with Nicole!
Thurs: Off (the day I passed out at 5:30pm)
Friday: Fitness Formula via classpass (and they were hosting a happy hour after. Bonus!

This was week six of eight on internal medicine for me. Our new attending is polar opposite of the former one, but I think I’ve gotten the hang of the style he likes. I got quite fond of two of my patients that gratefully are both headed home. I have found that taking time to talk to them like humans, not just about their illness, really helps. Both of these people were really frustrated and bummed out about having to be in the hospital for so long – they were bored and felt so disheveled and stuck. Those conversations where I really see and listen to my patients are my favorite because I can see how much they open up once you stop just talking about the medicine.
As for what I learned, this week was lots about pulmonary embolism work up and treatment, neurogenic bladder, Takotsubo (broken heart disease!), dosing insulin, and more on how to sift through symptoms and figure out the root cause. There is so much learning that isn’t just factual knowledge. It’s, “Okay, but how would you actually handle this in the hospital. What about in this unique situation? And what about with their social background?” There’s always something new!
In our Friday afternoon class, my team won the case competition by diagnosing AL Amyloidosis secondary to Multiple Myeloma. That was a fun way to end the week!
On Fitting It All In
Have a great weekend! Happy happy wedding day to the beautiful Teri, and Go Irish!
