I’m a few months into clinical rotations and getting used to wearing real people clothes to work each day.
Long time readers remember that I used to share my work outfit every day back in my former marketing life (feels like a lifetime ago!). It was nice to be able to wear workout clothes to class for a few years, but I really do enjoy putting together cute outfits! Getting dressed for work is different now for a few reasons – there are more restrictions to clothing as a med student, both being extra conservative and being practical while seeing patients and wearing a white coat.
I’m slowly adding some things to my closet, but definitely have some regulars that I keep coming back to. Especially when I’m exhausted and just need to get dressed and go! Here are my current work wardrobe staples:
Slightly more casual black sleeveless dress – similar
Old Navy midi t-shirt dress. It’s so versatile and works perfectly under a white coat, even though I wear it out all the time too! It’s currently out of stock which makes me so sad because I want all of you to buy it, but here are a few similar ones –similar, similar , similar,
Black J.Crew Martie pant – Note: even the “long” is still cropped for me!
Banana floral Sloan pant – The long is actually to my ankles (!!) so I plan on getting solid colors.
Loft Chinos – The long is great! These work for more casual days.
Blue striped A-line skirt – similar
Black suiting pencil skirt for the most formal occasions
V neck sleeveless blouse in tons of colors (I have olive, might get more at this price!)
Black sleeveless peplum top – similar (Love not tucking things in)
Simple tee shirts – Factory’s are a great fit.
Black driving mocc – current version
I haven’t spent money on any of the really nice comfortable shoes yet, but I may need to soon. Recommendations please!
I don’t want to look too done up at the hospital (or ever, really) so I go with just light make up to look a little more put together. I’m slowly transitioning to all Beautycounter as my other makeup runs out. Read more about it here.
Dew Skin — the best tinted moisturizer ever. You’ll hear me rave repeatedly! Light coverage, a little extra dewiness, and SPF! I wear shade 2.
Anastasia Eyebrow Wiz – might never transition from this. It’s just the best!
Lip Sheer — Terra is the most natural color for every day. It goes on so silky that I sometimes use it like a chapstick:)
Simple earrings. This set was a great purchase and I wear the little round circles constantly
Little gold Kendra Scott necklace that’s not too long so it doesn’t fall in patient’s faces!
I sometimes wear my everyday rings (a claddagh, a simple C that was a gift from Laura), sometimes don’t. Depends on what type of patient setting I’m in.
Check out Thredup for great deals – some of the items still have tags and they have GREAT brands like J.Crew, Banana, Loft, Lululemon etc!
Always use Ebates!! You just go to the site, click through to the store webpage, and then shop as usual. Each store has a different percentage cash back, so you get a little money back just for shopping. Why not??
Hope this gives you some good ideas for easy mix and match work outfits. Let me know if you have any must-haves I should check out!
